The Golden Era of Missionary Work (1700-1730)

During the early 18th century, the church witnessed a transformative period under the ministry of dedicated missionaries. The church gained prominence through exceptional spiritual leadership and community service.

Father Joseph Viyara and Father Beschi

Father Joseph Viyara was instrumental in the initial development of the mission at Kamanayanakpetti. From 1711 to 1714, Father Beschi (later known as Veeramamunivar) worked alongside Father Viyara, establishing a strong foundation for spiritual and educational work.

Saint Veeramamunivar (1680-1747) - Father Beschi

Father Beschi, known as Veeramamunivar (meaning "Friend of Tamil"), was one of the most significant figures in both the church's history and Tamil literature. Born in Italy, he dedicated his life to serving the people of Tamil Nadu and advancing Tamil language and scholarship.

Contributions to Tamil Language

Veeramamunivar made extraordinary contributions to Tamil language and literature. He translated important religious texts into Tamil, making Christian teachings accessible to Tamil-speaking communities. His efforts helped preserve and promote Tamil scholarly traditions during a critical period in history.

Tamil Significance:

The Martyrdom at Andipatti (December 21, 1714)

On the feast day of Saint Thomas (December 21, 1714), while Father Beschi was organizing Christmas preparations and had just completed the Thomas feast day celebrations, he was arrested by forces of Queen Mangamma. Due to his fluency in Latin and not being conversant in Tamil, his linguistic abilities were misinterpreted. The authorities, misunderstanding his work, sentenced him to death, falsely accusing him of practicing sorcery.

Miraculous Escape and Retreat

The intervention of the Zamindari official Sri. Sankarappa Nayak of Ettayapuram saved Father Beschi's life. With heavy heart, he traveled to Koppampatti where he devoted himself to learning Tamil language and culture. This retreat became a transformative period that deepened his connection with Tamil civilization.

The Miraculous Oil Spring

Interior view of church showing Mother's Statue with miraculous oil phenomenon

English Translation

This church was built in 1630 AD. This is the place where Veeramamunivar (Beschi), who developed the Tamil language, worked. In this special church, not only Christians but also people of other religions come and pray.

In this situation, on January 30, 2016, while cleaning the church, they saw oil leaking under the Mother's statue inside the church, wiped it clean and left. When they came and saw the next morning, oil had accumulated in large quantities around the statue.

When they cleaned it, oil came again like a spring. Seeing this, the villagers prayed until 11:30 PM on February 1, 2016. They prayed to Adaikala Mother that if this event should be made known to the public, this oil spring should come in large quantities.

The next day, as requested to the Mother, miraculous oil was filled in large quantities. On Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, when the Mother's statues were covered, no oil came. After that, on the 3rd day of Jesus' Resurrection celebration, oil came.

Like manna falling from heaven splitting the sky - the miracle of oil coming from the ground splitting the earth is happening here. The miraculous oil spring encourages weakened faith and confirms the Mother's presence.

Thus we lovingly invite you to receive the grace of Andipatti Sacred Shrine's Queen who gives miraculous oil and unites herself in the joy of the people.
